If you are visiting Yogyakarta and want to know the best way to go on a day trip to Kalibiru and necessary information about the place, then I have the answers for you. There are actually a few options that you can choose from that varies from renting a scooter to renting a private driver.
In this article, “A Day Trip to Kalibiru”, you will find information about the national park, how to get there, entrance fees and other necessary information about Kalibiru!
Kalibiru National Park
Kalibiru National Park is a beautiful park of lush nature, a peaceful environment, and beautiful views. The park is located in the Menoreh hills, at 450 meters above sea level. Except beautiful nature and views, the park also offers great sunsets and fun outdoor activities, such as tree tops that offers great views, flying fox and trekking paths that range from 1,5 to 7 kilometers.
Transportation to Kalibiru
It is possible to rent a scooter to go on a day trip to Kalibiru, but this is not an option that I recommend. The way there is quite bumpy with holes in the roads, steep and dangerous when it rains (it rains almost every day there). If you still want to rent a scooter to get there, then you should make sure to check the weather before. Go on the time of the day that has the most “sun safe” hours to avoid getting soaking wet (when it rain’s it is like a shower) and to slip with the scooter.
It is also good to know that that road’s that leads up to Kalibiru is not only steep but also pretty narrow and has sharp curves where you will meet other crazy drivers. As I said before, this is not recommended, but possible if you really want to do it.
Rent a taxi
This is far the best and most safe option to get to Kalibiru. It costs around 500.000 IDR for 12 hours, and during these 12 hours, you can go exactly where you want to go in Yogyakarta. This is a good option if you would like to go, for example, to both Kalibiru and Borobudur on the same day to save some money. If you decide to go to both of these places you have to know that you will not have so much time to spend at each place as it takes about 1-2 hours to get to both of the places from the city center.
It is possible to go on a day trip to Kalibiru by bus, but it takes time and a long exhausting walk or a taxi motor ride as well. From Yogyakarta, you can use the Trans Jogja bus to Giwangan bus station. From Giwangan bus station you have to change bus to Wates city and then you have to rent a taxi motor to get up to Kalibiru which is situated about 10 kilometers from the bus station. This is a cheaper option, but it will also take a lot more time.
You can also go on a day trip to Kalibiru by train + motor taxi. From Yogyakarta, you can use the Trans Jogja bus to the Tugu Railway station. From the railway station, you have to catch the train to Wates Railway station and then change to a taxi motor. This option is a bit easier and faster than by getting there by bus.
Ask your guesthouse, homestay or hotel for a ride
As the most of the taxis in Yogyakarta offers a 12 hours transportation for 500.000, then why not ask your accommodation place for a ride if you would like to go for fewer hours? This is what I did when I stayed in Yogyakarta, I asked my homestay if it was possible to get a ride as they had a car. As I didn’t want a 12 hours transportation for 500.000 then my homestay offered a ride there (about 1,5 hours), 1-2 hours to spend there (the time that I asked for) and also a ride back home (1,5 hours) for 200.000 IDR, which was a much better option for me!
Maybe your place will say yes or maybe they will say no, but if you get a no, then try to hire a taxi on the street and negotiate to a better price to go on a day trip to Kalibiru.
When is the best time to go for a Day Trip to Kalibiru?
If you want to avoid crowds and queues up to the trees where you take pictures, then you shouldn’t visit Kalibiru during weekends. You shouldn’t either visit the park while it’s raining because most of the tree spots are closing for safety reasons. Don’t visit the park too late either, because they close down the famous tree spots around 4-5 pm, depending on the weather. The best option is to go on a day trip to Kalibiru early in the morning, Monday to Friday.
